Hey friend! You must have heard of the clip-path property in css. No? Then you might be in for a treat. If yes wouldn’t you agree that it’s quite awesome and I would assume you landed here wondering where you could use it in your application? Here I’ll give a few use-cases with an example that would help you get started with using clip-path property in your application and the rest you can easily figure out.
The clip-path CSS property creates a clipping region that sets what part of an element should be displayed. Parts that are inside the region are displayed, while those outside are hidden. The clip-path property in CSS allows you to specify a specific region of an element show, rather than showing the complete area. There used to be a clip property, but note that is deprecated.
Elements on web pages are all defined inside a rectangular box. However, that doesn’t mean that we have to make everything look like a box. You can use the CSS clip-path property to clip away parts of an image or other element, to create interesting effects.
Other than the box values as explained later in the article, the various values of clip-path demonstrated have excellent browser support. For legacy browsers, a fallback may be to allow the browser to ignore the clip-path property and show the unclipped image. If this is a problem you could test for clip-path in a feature query and offer an alternate layout for unsupporting browsers
CSS’ clip-path property is your ticket to shape-shifting the monotonous, boxy layouts traditionally associated with flat, responsive design. You will begin to think outside the box, literally, and hexagons, stars, and octagons will begin to take form on your web pages. Once you get your hands dirty with clip-path, there’s no end to the shapes you can generate, simply by tweaking a few values. While the focus of this article is on clip-path using polygons with CSS, all of the demos provide a reference to an inline SVG, in order to gain additional support on Firefox.
The most common use case would be an image, but it’s not limited to that. You could just as easily apply clip-path to a paragraph tag and only a portion of the text. Those four values in the inset() represent the top/left point and the bottom/right point, which forms the visible rectangle. Everything outside of that rectangle is hidden.
While working on this article, I noticed a bug in Chrome with pointer-events being dispatched outside the clipped region, which violates the specification: “By default, pointer-events must not be dispatched on the clipped-out (non-visible) regions of a shape.” I have filed the bug. The issue with this demo was solved by using the pointer-events property with a value of none on the overlay. Alternatively, you could apply the same clip-path value to the overlay to resolve the issue.
Due to the negative margins applied, this demo would look odd in browsers that don’t support clip-path. You would have to use some sort of feature detection to apply the margins (although I haven’t experimented with this) or the @supports CSS feature query, although I wouldn’t recommend the latter in production code.
Polygon is the most flexible of all the available shapes because it allows you to specify any amount of points, a little bit an SVG path. The provided points are pairs of X and Y coordinates that can be of any unit (eg: pixel or percent-based). Because it’s the most flexible, it’s also the most complex and you’ll probably want to use a tool to define your points.
Let’s illustrate with an example. First, you’ll see our starting image, then our image with a clip-path applied to get a triangle shape, followed by a more complex X-shape, and then finally a star shape.
